Should YOU get a fitness tracker?

There is one basic principle behind every method of weight loss – the amount of calories that you are eating must be less than the amount you burn.
You can reduce your calorie intake by eating healthy foods, following a diet plan, and by eating less.

Increasing the amount of calories you burn is possibly even easier: exercise more, eat foods which take a lot of energy to digest, and make sure that you stay healthy and well rested.


But how can we track our daily energy input and output? For people who are dedicated to losing weight, activity trackers and apps can be useful tools.
What is a fitness tracker?A fitness tracker is a tool which helps you calculate the number of calories you burn while exercising and performing daily tasks. They often come hand in hand with a way of counting the calories that you consume, which makes your job even easier.


How do they work?
Most fitness trackers work by providing an estimate of the calories you burn based on a number of factors, including weight, height, gender, and measured physical activity. They may have a function which allows you to count your calories in the same program, or they may be compatible with separate apps or websites which perform this function. Sometimes, just the fact that you are keeping a record of your physical activity and eating habits can be great motivation.

Choosing a fitness tracker:
Fitness trackers and calorie counters come in a range of different forms, from smartphone apps and websites to watch-like devices. Many are designed for a specific activity or group of activities. Before choosing one, it is important to consider the following things:
-What will you use it for? For example, if a big part of your exercise is swimming, you will need a waterproof device which is compatible with swimming.
-Do you want extra features? More expensive models often include features such as GPS tracking or heart-rate monitoring.
-Will you be using it to count your calories? Many fitness trackers have apps which let you log your food intake and any other relevant information.
-Design: Some fitness trackers come as bands to wear on your wrist, others have clips to hook on your clothing, while still others can be strapped to your ankle or shoe laces. It is important to choose a design which suits your purposes.
-Price: If you are a casual exerciser who doesn’t take calorie counting super seriously, then you shouldn’t spend too much on a top of the range model which you don’t need. Rather, opt for a cheap model which performs the basic functions – an upgrade is always possible if you decide it’s necessary.

The conclusion? Yes, fitness trackers and calorie counters can work if used correctly. If you need extra motivation, or simply don’t know where to start with your weight loss program, then they can be a useful tool.

Personally I have used a couple of different ones (I had 2 x FitBits and now I have an ATLAS which is pretty advanced), and I think they are a REALLY useful tool, especially if they allow for calorie tracking! Whenever I want to get lean for a shoot or an expo I always track my input and output!
